CHAPTER 24
Neve and Eleksi rode late into the night, the memory of his brief, intense kiss warm on her lips.
A glittering starry sky guided the way north. The vegetation became starker and taller, and the temperature dropped. Snow capped the mountains in the northern regions of Zermes in the wintertime. Neve hoped she wouldnât still be a fugitive at the turn of the season.
âI shouldnât have kissed you,â said Eleksi out of nowhere. Their horses ambled side by side on the starlit forest path. âI was . . . overcome.â
Neveâs shoulders tightened in surprise and disappointment. She didnât consider the kiss a mistake. She considered it wonderful, and she was dismayed that he seemed to think otherwise.
âOvercome by what?â she asked, trying to understand.
âMy desire for you,â he replied in his low, deep voice, as if the answer was obvious. âI had no right to take advantage of you in a vulnerable moment. Youâd just fought for your life.â
âYou didnât take advantage of me.â She paused, fiddling with the supple leather of her reins. âI liked the kiss.â
âSo did I. I liked it so much that it disquieted me.â
âHow so?â
He exhaled a measured breath. âThe only strong feelings Iâve ever had have been bad ones.â
âPerhaps itâs time for a change.â
âPerhaps.â He gave her a sidelong look. âYou donât regret it?â
âI donât regret it,â she replied emphatically. âYou are the one gambling with your life by putting your flesh on mine. You know what happened the last time I kissed someone.â
The assassin chuckled. âLike I said, you just hadnât met me.â
âBesides, we have more urgent concerns than a kiss. Our very survival.â
âAye.â
âIf we canât defeat Meliohr, Iâll have to leave Zermes,â she said. âItâd be too risky to stay here. But where would I go?â
âYou mean, where would we go?â replied Eleksi, his silvery eyes like stars in the velvety dark of the forest. âI wouldnât leave you to your own devices. Nor would I want to.â
Pleased, Neve suppressed a smile. âMorktland isnât an option, for obvious reasons. Weâd be walking right into Garstang territory.â
âAlthough, hiding under their noses mightnât be the worst idea.â
Neve shuddered. âEven if Iâm not identified as Leonidâs child, if Iâm captured for sorcery, a foul fate would await me.â
âNot Morktland, then.â
âIâve always wanted to visit Velandia.â
âThey are the closest kingdom, though,â said Eleksi. âPeople travel between here and there all the time. Your likelihood of discovery is high enough that you may as well stay here, in your own land.â
Neve sighed. âIf only I had mountains of gold, we could hire every single Spider King to do our bidding, not Meliohrâs.â An owl hooted softly in the trees. âHow much would it cost, anyway? To hire all of the Spider Kings, to ensure they canât come after us?â
âThere are hundreds of us. And new recruits are trained every day. Only the very wealthiest families have enough gold to command the entire company, and this is by design. Nobles canât allow common people an avenue to overthrow them.
